Charlie Engle – The Interview

Charlie Engle – The Interview

Running-the-Saraha

WARNING – This podcast may inspire you to deeds of awesomeness and the search for the ultimate adventure of a lifetime.

What a great opportunity it was to chat to Charlie Engle about some of his greatest races and achievements ranging from turning up for a 5k fun run in Australia, only to find out it is actually a 50k, then to bite the bullet and win his first ever Ultra. Charlie believes that suffering is the greatest teacher of all and that you should change your relationship with pain.

Charlie is known for his unprecedented 111-day run across the Sahara Desert with friends Ray Zahab and Kevin Lin — a feat chronicled in the Matt Damon narrated documentary called Running the Sahara, setting a new standard for what is considered a “long run”. He has done more than 300 races globally, many against great odds only to emerge victorious.

He has also had his fair share of hardship with a stint in Federal prison. Its a saga culminating in a federal conviction for mortgage fraud for misstating income on so-called “liar loan” documents , Charlie was sent to Beckley Federal Prison in West Virginia, where he would still run, like he would call it, RIP, Running in place.

We talk about Charlie’s toughest moments while racing, his charity work, nutrition and spiritual awareness through yoga and meditation, and coming to South Africa for a ‘Big Run” and his upcoming book.

Charlie is a great man, and it was a great opportunity to draw from his vast experience and knowledge. Enjoy.
