Keys to sucessful UltraRunning – Consistency

Consistency is defined as ” Consistent behavior or treatment” but more “The quality of achieving a level of performance which does not vary greatly in quality over time

Now there are many keys to being a  successful ultra runner, what I mean by that is that you can compete in the events and survive. Obviously there are many other things that will give you success and I will name a few but I will focus on the main one, Consistency.

  • Mental Capacity & Toughness
  • Time on feet
  • discipline
  • Structure
  • Cross training
  • Simplicity
  • Recovery
  • Nutrition

I read an article today about the transition from marathons to ultra running, and this got me thinking about what is the key to getting through any big race? Now train hard and run easy is not the case most of the time because in big races you will need the mental toughness just as much as the physical ability.

This brings me to what I have learned from the people I have interviewed and talked to, consistency… So that means you need to run more and keep running every day, week on week, year to year.

Allison Pattillo that wrote the article on competitor running stated the following

When it comes to ultra training, running consistently is more important than running fast. Many folks coming from a road running background focus too much on pace and mileage. There is really less of a science behind ultra running. You just need to run every day. If you’re feeling bad, slow down. If you feel good, go faster
Can it truly be that easy? So if I run consistently day on day I will be a successful runner? I wish it was that easy…

This is where the other keys come into play that help you train consistently. Having the mental toughness to get out that door when you are feeling bad and don’t have the right attitude.  Eating well so that you have the energy to run every day, so that you recover for the next day . Structure and Simplicity go together, have the right structure to your training but keep things simple and this will help you with consistency.  Discipline to continue this day in and day out…



To be a consistent winner means preparing not just one day,one month or even one year – but for a lifetime…think about it!

  1. I am scared to run everyday, scared that without a day between every run I set myself up for injury. Yet I still get injured. Perhaps I need to run every day with shorter distances.
