Landie Greyling… on trails and toothbrushes…

Landie Greyling… on trails and toothbrushes…

South Africa has only ONE trail dassie. She doesn’t need any introduction. She has the best legs in the world, the friendliest smile and runs like the wind. She has numerous wins behind her name, too many to mention. Yup, you guessed it. We had an interview with Landie Greyling

Are you plagued by any chronic injuries that flare up and need management, and if not, then what’s your secret to staying mostly injury free?

Fortunately I am generally quite injury free and have not been out with a chronic injury in the last 3 years. I believe in going for regular massages, I see my chiropractor, Jacques Breitenbach, once a month and run with minimalistic shoes.

Have you jumped on any nutritional bandwagons—any crazy cleanses, caveman diets, hold-the-gluten or fruitarian binges?

Not really, but I generally try and avoid too much complex carbs as it leaves me feeling bloated.

Generally speaking, what keeps you motivated as a runner and how do you avoid burnout?

The fact that I absolutely love what I do, helps a lot. But I try and take some time out every couple of months just to appreciate my running again and to create the need to run again…

 Describe an embarrassing athletic moment…

Popping a bottle of champagne after my win at the Red Bull Lionheart and popping my peak cap right off!

What was your most lopsided win?

Two Oceans Trail Run 2014. I didn’t want to enter, did not taper and ended up breaking the record with 5 minutes

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not running? Cross country skiing

We’d love to know who LANDIE is, apart from being an athlete:

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

My husband Christiaan. Because he is always positive, the most level-headed person I know and supports me 100%!!

How would you give away R50 000?

I would give it to a foundation who manage women in sport

What are your hobbies?

Travelling, playing board & card games, listening to Jazz music

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

“You don’t know how much you inspire and motivate people”

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

Both my parents and my cross country coach at school

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

That trail running become an Olympic sport!

Give me your greatest strength in life and then your greatest weakness.

I am very disciplined. I can be extremely hard on myself and other people

If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

Venison with broccoli and sweet potato

What is Christiaan’s nickname for you?

Anything you and Christiaan disagree on? (ok, let it out…) J

Grocery shopping!!

What is your all-time favourite movie?

“Into the wild”

What is the perfect lazy Saturday night for you?

Chatting to Christiaan about our dreams in front of the fireplace with a glass of red wine

What is your favourite comfort food?

What is the most you have ever paid for a pair of shoes?

What was the last book you read?

“The Great Wall” by Braam Malherbe & David Grier

What is the colour of your toothbrush?

What is the strangest gift Christiaan has ever bought you?

A talking puppy soft toy

We posed the same questions to Christiaan to see how well he knows Landie….

What is Landie’s favourite comfort food?

Indian, Chicken Tikka Masala and anything with broccoli added

What is the most she has ever paid for a pair of shoes?

She works well with her money, must have been running shoes before being sponsored – I would say about R1200

What was the last book she read?

Running with the Kenyans. Busy with a number of books currently…

What is the colour of her toothbrush?

Green, the same as mine, I get confused from time to time J

What is the strangest gift you have ever bought her?

Soft toys, Once a Dassie from the Kruger Park and a Fox from Cambridge in UK.

Now that is true love… sharing a toothbrush! And we all know men don’t know too much about shoes and hate shopping! Well, the dassie is on a roll and we’d better try and keep up! Wishing you all of the best Landie.
