Sandes to tame the Alps

Sandes to tame the Alps

After arguably one of the toughest years of his career in 2015, ultra endurance trail runner, Ryan Sandes has come back with one thing on his mind, his unfinished business with the trail run of all trail runs – Ultra Trail Mont Blanc (UTMB) taking place on Friday 26 August. Unfortunately due to his Glandular Fever last year, Sandes was unable to complete the race, but is determined to finish strong in 2016 and finally tame the Alps.

“I’m really looking forward to running the Ultra-Trail Mont Blanc this year. It’s the most competitive ultra-trail race in the world and is on every trail runner’s bucket list,” says Sandes. “My preparations went well – I ran the entire course over three days and the scenery is spectacular.”

Next Friday Ryan will be lining up with roughly 2300 of the toughest runners in the world to take on the French, Swiss and Italian Alps in the 100mile UTMB Race. Known as one of the most difficult foot races in Europe, the 170km loop race, has more than 10 000m of positive altitude change before it ends – a total climb which is higher than Mount Everest.

The race loop around Mont Blanc follows the Tour du Mont Blanc hiking path that normally takes hikers between 7 to 9 days to complete, but the lead runners will complete this course in just over 20hrs, with the final cut off time after 46hrs30min. The race is termed semi-self-sufficient, with 10 food/ drink posts situated on the course where the participants can take whatever food and drink they need.

“It also happens to be the first international race my parents and sister will be at which makes it even more special. The race is a long way, on some very tough terrain, so I plan to start off conservatively and finish strong. I can’t wait!”
