SolarMonkey Adventurer – A true Traveler

SolarMonkey Adventurer – A true Traveler

I have been in the market for some form of mobile power charging device for a while now and my first attempt with an Energizer power pack failed miserably on my last 3 Day stage race, and left me drained. So after some research I stumbled upon what seems to be the answer to my problems? The SolarMonkey Adventurer! Lets see how the device performed.

Product Description: Short Version

The SolarMonkey Adventurer is a slimline, compact 2-panel solar charger with a 2500mAh internal lithium polymer battery.

Background and understanding what the product does:

Developed after several years by an award-winning market leader in the portable power industry and using feedback from real power users in some of the world’s most inhospitable environments, Powertraveller have added the SolarMonkey Adventurer to their award-winning range. With power a scarce commodity in some parts of the world, Powertraveller realised that a balance between solar charging and reserve battery capacity at an optimum, efficient level was a necessity and they utilised their experience to develop a powerful solar charger with an internal battery which, in optimum light conditions, can be charged by the solar panels in just 8 to 12 hours – a first for Powertraveller.

The SolarMonkey Adventurer is a slimline, compact, 2-panel solar charger with a 2500mAh internal lithium polymer battery. The clamshell design offers optimum weight-to-efficiency at just 265g and the 2 solar panels output 3 watt max. The Adventurer features auto-load, self-sensing switching technology, meaning when a device is connected, the adventurer will automatically start to charge your device and will optimise the charging parameters required. The polysilicon solar panel offers photovoltaic efficiency up to 17% and features a USB 700mA @ 5V output, fully supporting Apple iPhones, iPads, iPods, mobile phones and other 5V gadgets such as portable games consoles, handheld GPS systems, e-readers, etc.

SolarMonkey vs “the rest”

Well I wont lie but my knowledge in the portable charger market is limited to what I have read and experienced. What I can testify to is that the time spent developing the SolarMonkey Adventurer was well worth it. From the build quality right down to ease of use, time was spent to make sure that anyone can use this product and that it works the first time and every time. You may argue that there are many good alternatives in the power pack market but there is nothing that comes close to the integrated solar& battery capabilities of this product.

Many of the charging products on the market in South-Africa are used for extending the life of your phone at the business but we are talking about a product here that is aimed at the adventurer. That guy that is out there living his dream and exploring our beautiful country with his two feet or two wheels.

The proof is in the pudding – (test device)

I must be honest usually someone reviews a product and they use it for a couple of days but I was so impressed by the SolarMonkey, that I have been using the device extensively for over 2 months. Recently there has been a high amount of load-shedding in the country and for safety concerns I wanted to make sure my mobile was charged at all times, I relied on the SolarMonkey on a couple of occasions to charge up my mobile.

Lets start with what I liked about the product

  • The ruggedness of the design, this is one solid device.
The solar recharge of the power unit is unmatched in the market.
Waterproof design makes this device one for any adventure.
The weight of the unit, wont really make a difference in your pack.
The pouch that has so many ways of strapping the SM to your pack.
Safety is always big on my list and I can say that this is safe and probably child proof.
Ease of use! Plug and play.
    Quick Charging.

What can be improved upon?

  • Well there is only one thing that i could mention and that is the space in the pouch where you put your cable in, there is not enough space in my opinion when you flatten the device completely when in the pouch strapped to a pack and charging a device. If they create a slit in the pouch with rubber ends it would be great and it would not feel as tight.

I found that on average it would take the SM about 3 hours to charge my mobile from dead to 100%. Depending on how big your battery is but between my HTC ONE M8 and iPhone it was generally 3 hours. The Garmin Fenix 2 charged in about 30minutes to 1 hour.

Conclusion

In the end you would want to know if you should buy the product and if it will meet your requirements. I can definitely say that the SolarMonkey Adventurer is worth the money! You will buy the unit and use it when you are out Camping, Hiking , running , biking and every other adventure you can think of. When I ship this unit back to PowerTraveller i am going out and buying my own!

“The units are fast and lightweight, and allow us to keep our devices powered up over long distances – night and day” – Ryan Sandes & Ryno Griesel

You can find them at most outdoor shops in South-Africa.
