Training your body when your not running – Burpees!

So what if i told you that besides actually running there was one exercise that can keep your body in shape and also fall in with your track work. Well I am sure that many of you know about this thing called a “Burpee”. This is probably the single best exercise to keep your total body and heart in shape when you are not running.

So for you runners that don’t know this is what a burpee is here is a video of how you do a burpee. Now you will see there are many combinations and you do not have to combine the push-up with them. But as you get stronger this is the way you would want to do them!

You need to push yourself and record your time :) Start with 100 and see how you can improve your overall time over a couple of months.

My current time is about 7-8 min.

  • Strength :Burpees will help you to improve the overall strength of your body.
  • Speed: Burpees are so difficult because they rely on you executing them at a reasonably fast pace.
  • Endurance: Burpees are remarkably effective for increasing your cardio endurance and your muscular endurance.
  • Fat Loss: Because burpees are HIIT they will keep you lean.

In addition to training your upper- and lower-body , burpees can improve the health of your heart and lungs. I think  they will help you during those last KM’s of the race when you are tired like speedwork they are also HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).

So for us trail runners that traverse these HUGE mountains, get down and do some burpees!
