What are you doing? Right now?

What are you doing? Right now?

How far do you push? In everything? What did you do today that took your breath away? Did you take a trip to the edge of your comfort zone, taste the fear, feel the adrenaline? Or did you, like me, wallow in your mediocre existence, wishing for more?

Your wishes are not your reality.

We spend our days chasing the next item on our list of things we need to buy. A new house, a new car, that tablet that everyone is raving about. Why? What benefit do these objects provide us? We enter the cycle, working to buy more things… buying more things keeps us working. This spiral continues until we get our just reward, retirement. Aaah, sweet retirement! A time to rest and recuperate from a well lived life…. Or perhaps a period to reflect on what we haven’t managed to get around to while we wait for the inevitable long darkness?
running-quote

Experience trumps belongings, every time. Studies have shown that increasing your income doesn’t necessarily result in increased happiness. The happiest people are those that have experienced life, have lived, tried things, failed at things. The experiences build the person, build character, and allow reflection.

So we read the inspirational meme’s sent to us on Facebook by our friends. Amazing, insightful quotes superimposed on spectacular imagery. Perhaps a beautiful landscape or a person doing something remarkable. For a very brief instant we feel that emotion that the image or quote was meant to spark in you. But instead of acting on it, we scroll further down the page, looking for the next bit of brain sludge. We stay on the couch, wishing, if only….if only ….if only….

It’s time, right now! Get up and get on with it! No more waiting for the weather to change, for a new pair of shoes, for your Garmin to find the friggin satellites. Make a commitment, do something.. Start now! Put down your device, lace up and hit the trails! So there’s a storm, run in it, what have you got to lose? Feel the ice cold rain hitting your skin, don’t hide from it. Embrace it. Smell, taste, feel, immerse…

Burn the bridge. Nuke the foundation. Back yourself up against a wall. Have an opinion one way or the other, get off the fence and rip it up. Cut yourself off so there is no going back. Once you’re committed the truth will come out. You ask about security? What you need is uncertainty. What you need is confusion; something that forces you to reinvent yourself, a whip to drive you harder.

You only have this moment, right now. The future hasn’t happened yet, the past is gone.

What are you doing? Right now?
